EKG Chapter 1.1
1.(a) Name various types of pumps generally used on board ships. (4)
(b) Draw a vertical, single inlet centrifugal pump & write different parts of it. (6)
Ans (a): Various types of pumps generally used on board ship:
The pumps used onboard ship are broadly classified into two types.
1. Positive displacement Pump.
2. Dynamic pressure pump/centrifugal pump.
1. Positive displacement pumps are:
Reciprocating pump
Screw pump
Gear Pump
Ram type pump
Vane pump
Piston pump
Plunger pump
2. Dynamic Pressure Pumps are:
Centrifugal pump
Axial flow pump
Submersible pump
Centrifugal-axial (mixed) pump
Ans (b): vertical, single inlet centrifugal pump:
Fig: Vertical, single inlet centrifugal pump
Different parts of vertical, single inlet centrifugal pump:
Impeller: Impeller is a rotor used to increase the kinetic energy of the flow.
Casing (Volute): The casing contains the liquid and acts as a pressure containment vessel that directs the flow of liquid in and out of the centrifugal pump.
Shaft (Rotor): The impeller is mounted on a shaft. Shaft is a mechanical component for transmitting torque from the motor to the impeller.
Shaft sealing: Centrifugal pumps are provided with packing rings or mechanical seal which helps to prevent the leakage of the pumped liquid.
Bearings: Bearings reduce friction between the rotating shaft and the stator.
Etc.
